About the Book
Tori Henderson is on the fast track in her marketing career in Houston, but her personal life is slow as molasses. So when her beloved Aunt Dottie falls ill, Tori travel back to tiny Bayford to care for her. But when she arrives, Tori is faced with more than what she bargained for, including Dottie’s struggling local store and a trouble little step-cousin, DeAndre. Worse, the nearest Starbucks is twenty miles away.

Just as Tori is feeling overwhelmed, she re-connects with her old crush, the pastor’s son, Jacob, who is as handsome as Tori remembers. As the church rallies for Aunt Dottie’s recovery, Aunt Dottie reminds Tori of God’s love. Tori came to Bayford to give, but she just might receive more than she dreamed was still possible for her.

Why God Won't Go Away: Is the New Atheism Running on Empty?

Alister Mcgrath

  • Paperback: 224 pages

  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (May 17, 2011)

  • Language: English

  • ISBN-10: 084994645X

  • An accessible discourse written by a trusted expert and scholar critiquing the new atheism on its own merits and claims.
The rise of the new atheism, which includes the manifestos of Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, has created a public willingness in today's marketplace to talk about God and religion. Yet the debate up to this point has focused largely on rebutting the new atheist critique of Christianity. Why God Won't God Away moves into new territory by challenging the new atheism on its own grounds. Chapters include discussion on:
    • What is the new atheism
    • The problem of religion
    • The problem of human nature
    • Believing only what can be proved
    • Dealing with imagined worlds and myths
    • The new humanism and the new enlightenment
    • Violence and dogmatism
This book is written by a theology professor and Christian apologist who not only has a best-selling book rebutting the new atheist critique of Christianity but has debated Richard Dawkins in Oxford, Christopher Hitchens in Washington, and Daniel Dennett in London.

    The Soul of Prayer

    The Soul of Prayer

    P. Forsyth

"Here is a no-nonsense theologian who goes for the jugular. In Forsyth's company we are aware of both the glory and the gravity of what we are doing when we go to our knees in prayer." -Eugene H. Peterson P. T. Forsyth is sometimes described as an English pre-cursor to Karl Barth. He was born in 1848 to a Scottish family of humble origins and later in life attended Aberdeen University, where he graduated with first-class honours in classical literature in 1869. In 1876 he was ordained and called to minister in Shipley, Yorkshire. In his early ministry in the Congregational Church, Forsyth fought orthodoxy and sought for the right to rethink Christian theology and pursue liberal thought. In 1878, however, Forsyth experienced a conversion from, in his own words, "being a Christian to being a believer, from a lover of love to an object of grace." A profound awareness of pastoral responsibility was awakened which radically altered the the course of his ministry. His conversion thrust him from the leadership of liberalism to a recovery of the theology of grace. Quickly, he became one of the better-known figures in British Nonconformity. In 1894, he received a call to Emmanuel College in Cambridge, where he preached his famous sermon, "Holy Father" in 1896. In 1901, he accepted a position as principal of Hackney Theological College, London where he remained until he died in 1921. Over his lifetime Forsyth published 25 books and more than 260 articles. He is often credited with recovering for his generation the reality and true dimensions of the grace of God.

    CFBA: A Bond Never Broken

    This week, the

    Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

    is introducing

    A Bond Never Broken

    Bethany House (March 1, 2011)

    by

    Judith Miller

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A Word from Judith:

Most readers want to know how authors 'got started' writing. My first novel, Threads of Love, was conceived when I was commuting sixty miles to work each day. I wanted to tell the story of a pioneer girl coming to Kansas and the faith that sustained her as she adjusted to a new life. When the book was completed, I tucked it away. I had absolutely no idea how publication of a book occurred and had given no thought to the concept. However, through a co-worker, I was directed to Tracie Peterson who, at that time, worked down the hall from me. Having never met Tracie, I was totally unaware of her writing career, but God intervened. The rest is, as they say, history...

With a graciousness that continues to amaze me, Tracie agreed to read my story, directed me to a publisher, and gave me information on a Christian writers conference. Since that first encounter many years ago, I have been blessed with the publication of numerous books, novellas and a juvenile fiction book. Joyously, Tracie and I had the opportunity to develop a blessed friendship. In fact, we have co-authored several series together, including The Bells of Lowell, the Lights of Lowell and The Broadmoor Legacy. In addition, I have continued to write several solo series.

    ABOUT THE BOOK

For many years, Ilsa Redlich has helped her parents run a hotel in South Amana, but as the United States enters the Great War, she can feel her world changing. The residents of the towns surrounding the Amana Colonies used to be accepting of their quiet, peaceful neighbors, but with anti-German sentiment running high, the Amana villages are now plagued by vandalism, threats, and insults.

Things get even worse when Ilsa finds out her family won't be allowed to speak German in public--and that Garon, the childhood friend she's long been smitten with, has decided to join the army. Jutta Schmidt is shocked when several members of the Council of National Defense show up on her family's doorstep. Sure, the Schmidts once lived in the Amana Colonies, but that was years ago. She's even more surprised when the council demands that she travel to Amana and report back on any un-American activities.

Not daring to disobey the government agents, Jutta takes a job at the South Amana hotel, befriends the daughter of the owners, and begins to eavesdrop every chance she gets. When Jutta hears Ilsa making antiwar remarks and observes Garon assisting a suspicious outsider, she is torn at the prospect of betraying her new friends.

But what choice does she have? And when Garon is accused of something far worse than Jutta could imagine, can the Amana community come to his aid in time?

Latest Smoke Signals Newsletter from Wiconi -- passed along here for you

    smoke signals masthead
    Hau kola "hello friend,"

Cree tribal elder and pastor, Stan, led us in a beautiful time of traditional prayer, singing and ceremony around the sacred fire to begin the theological/ministry leaders learning conference where I taught. I talked with Stan and loved his heart for his people and his passion for Jesus. I also received the following note recently from a woman acknowledging how Wiconi has been a great help to her in thinking through issues of faith and culture, much like Stan has been doing for many years.

"When I became a Christian, I was told by other Native Christians that we couldn't attend Powwows. My heart ached whenever I would hear our songs, especially the very humble prayer songs.  I have so many questions, yet I know God has brought me this far, He will answer everyone. There ARE MANY Native people in my area waiting to hear this information and confirmation you write and speak of. Please pray for the people on my reservation. Seems we are at war with ourselves and amongst ourselves. The churches are near falling apart completely- sick and evil things have gone on. I've felted trapped in speaking up, because it's embarrassing as a Christian. I know the rejecting I may face, having graduated from a Native bible college myself. Many of our elders are still waiting for true answers and many already know but have NOT been able to communicate it to the rest of us because of the strong blunt force abuse in Boarding schools etc. It's like we all knew deep down that SOMETHING has been terribly wrong and NOT ALL THINGS MATCH UP with what man's religion has stated. So thank you, Richard, for communicating all of these wonderful things. Wopida "thank you."

Thank you for your partnership and friendship with us in helping people who are seeking greater freedom to become a better human being as followers of the ways of Jesus.

    Your Lakota friend,

    Richard Twiss, (Sicangu Lakota)

    Education and Learning For Change

These photos represent peoples stories of exploration, dialogue, and theological reflection in seeking positive change in their communities. Most all are involved in a native church or ministry. I had the privilage of speaking at five different gatherings of native people in the past seven weeks. I was teaching and discussing new and innovative ways to consider the complimentary relationship between native culture and biblical faith. I was deeply encouraged by their stories!
